Segovia (Fall, Spring, & Summer)
A city of exceptional significance in Roman and medieval times, and declared World Heritage Site in 1985, Segovia remains one of Spain’s most picturesque tourist destinations. On the way to Segovia, IUIN students will visit the Palacio Real de La Granja and its Baroque Style gardens from the 18th Century. Upon arrival in Segovia, the group will see the Acueducto Romano, the most significant public construction in terms of Roman architecture in Spain, which was built in the 1st Century A.D. Later, the group will tour the Alcázar, an ancient medieval palace, and the Catedral de Segovia, the last of the Gothic cathedrals built in Spain (16th Century), and which houses a valuable art collection.
Toledo (Fall, Spring, & Summer)
The Spanish city which boasts the greatest number of monuments per square foot, Toledo is known as the city of “three cultures” (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim). Students will leave Alcalá for Toledo first thing in the morning. Once there, the group will climb up to the Parador de Turismo, where we will view the city from its best vantage point. While in Toledo, the group will visit El Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, whose original purpose was to be the pantheon of the Reyes Católicos; the Sinagoga de Samuel –ha-Levi, today a museum dedicated to the presence of the Jewish culture in Spain; La Iglesia de Santo Tomé, where “El entierro del Conde de Orgaz”, masterpiece of El Greco, is located; and La Catedral de Toledo, where we will find masterpieces of art dating from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century.
El Escorial/ Valle de los Caídos (Fall, Spring, & Summer)
Just 40 Km. from Madrid lies El Escorial, whose main attraction is El Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Ordered built by King Felipe II, this site has served as a monastery, palace, and pantheon of the Royal Family since 1563. While there, we’ll also visit La Basílica de la Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos, a striking funerary monument ordered built by General Francisco Franco after the Civil War, and located in a spot of great natural beauty.
