Intensive Summer Courses in Spanish Language And Culture (Graduates)
Courses directed at graduate students of varying linguistic levels and abilities (intermediate, advanced, bilingual). The Instituto Universitario Internacional in the E.U. Cardenal Cisneros boasts an exceptional quality of faculty and instruction (Masters and/ or PhDs), recognizes credits from other academic institutions, and issues graduate level credits. The IUIN is home to the Graduate Year Abroad program of Bowling Green State University.
Classes
- Each class has a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes.
- Each course (45 hours total) will be held everyday, from Monday thru Thursday.
- All classes are conducted in Spanish by native Spanish-speaking professors.
Class Offerings
Each student may select up to 5 classes, all within the IUIN.
Class offerings within the IUIN:
- Metodología y Didáctica del Español
3 hours. This course is aimed at non-Spanish students interested in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. A certain emphasis will be placed on common problems and mistakes made by the student of Spanish as a foreign language, and ways to avoid these. This class requires active participation on the part of the student and will include various presentations and simulated lessons/ classes.
- Gramática
3 hours. This course is designed for graduate students who posses a high level of proficiency in Spanish. Emphasis is on problems, exceptions, subtleties, and idiomatic expressions
- Madrid Literario
3 hours. This course seeks not only an understanding of literary texts, but also a unique comprehension of the setting of many of Spain’s great literary creations. Walks through the city streets, visits to the city’s principal museums, and discussions and debates in Madrid’s cafés will complement hours spent in the classroom, in order to allow the student to achieve a better understanding of the city which has served as a backdrop not only for most of Spain’s greatest literary masterpieces but also for their creators.
- Civilización Española
3 hours. This course presents a wide variety of information about Spain and its people. Topics include close study and analysis of the most significant aspects of Spanish geography, history, politics, art history, and popular culture
- Cine y Literatura
3 hours. This course involves a study of the parallels between the art forms of cinema and literature, focusing on narrative and linguistic aspects, as well as the mutual influences between these two media. Themes covered will include: parallel elements of literature and cinema (language, themes, structure, etc.); writers in the media of cinema; and adaptations, references, influences, etc., between cinema and literature.
- Técnicas de Investigación en la Biblioteca Nacional
3 hours. Guided research at the prestigious Biblioteca Nacional de España, the superior library institution in Spain and the official site of the documentation, preservation, identification, and diffusion of national cultural heritage. Topics vary according to the specific needs and interests of the student.
- Literatura Hispanoamericana
3 hours. This course is a study of the literature of Iberoamerica, from the Colonization to the present, in which all major genres will be examined (theatre, poetry, novel, short story). Emphasis will be on major currents of thought, political and philosophical movements, and the effects of these on the literature of the region. Course content may be adjusted under certain circumstances to better suit the needs of any particular group.
- Literatura Española
3 hours. A study of the literature of the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to present, focusing on the major themes and trends in political, social, and religious ideas. All major genres will be covered (theatre, poetry, novel, and short story). Course content may be adjusted under certain circumstances to better suit the needs of any particular group.
